Specialized Safaris

If you are looking for a unique way to experience African wildlife Botswana has a whole range of specialized safari options. Many of these options will give you in depth wildlife adventures that exceed the experience of a regular game drive by far.

Elephant Back Safaris

The African is a fascinating animal in many ways. The largest land animal is an incredibly intelligent and social animal. An elephant back safari will not only allow you to view the African landscape from a completely different perspective, but give you an intimate and instructive experience of these amazing creatures.

Elephant back safaris allow you to blend in with the elephant’s natural environment. Other animals will be much more at ease and display their natural behaviour, since elephants – as opposed to safari vehicles – are part of their natural environment.

You will also have the chance to be involved in the day routine of the herd and the elephant-handlers. You will get to know every member of the herd individually and experience these large mammals close up as they play, bath and feed. An elephant safari is a unique wildlife experience and very humbling one at that.

Horseback Safaris

One of the most exciting ways to experience Botswana’s swamps and open plains is on horseback. Fly over endless fields of open grass with nothing but the drumming of hooves in your ear or mingle with large herds of zebra. Sneak up on African giants like buffalo, giraffe or elephant and master the challenging and beautiful terrain of the African bush.

Horseback safaris are a unique and intimate way to experience African wildlife. To passionate riders the varied landscapes of open grasslands, swamps and river crossings will be a once in a lifetime experience. Saddle up!

Birding

In the wake of big game safaris it is easy to overlook Botswana as a birding destination par excellence. The vast national parks and game reserves cover a diverse range of habitats and attract well over 500 bird species.

The birdlife ranges from the hardened residents of the Makgadikgadi Pans to vibrant mix of migratory and resident birds. Botswana is also home to the largest bird, the ostrich, and the heaviest flying bird, the kori bustard.

Other notable species include:

  • Pel’s Fishing Owl
  • Slaty Egret
  • Wattled Crane
  • Rufous-bellied Heron

Birding safaris are conducted in a number of true birding hot spots such as:

  • Moremi Game Reserve
  • Chobe National Park
  • Makgadikgadi Pan

Whether you’re exploring the channels of the Okavango Delta, sitting in a shaded spot by the Chobe River or driving through arid vastness – Botswana’s birdlife never disappoints.

Fishing

The Okavango River offers great opportunities for fresh water fishing. Whether you go for the main river of the secluded lagoons within the maze of channels; tigerfish, bream and tilalia are abundant. The unique eco-system of the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta, offers anglers a unique experience. Where else can you watch large herds of elephant, hippos and 450 bird species as you wait for a big one to bite?
