Gaborone – Botswana’s Capital
Gaborone or Gabs, as it is referred to by the locals, is Botswana’s capital. Located on the Boarder of South Africa is serves as the entry port for many overlanders and travellers from the south. Even though Maun is the major tourism hub, Gaborone is still a good place to shop and stock up on supplies. Not exactly a major city by European standards, Botswana’s capital does offer some shopping malls and a range of retail stores.
What to Do in Gaborone
If you are looking to spend some money in Gaborone you will likely find yourself in one of the shopping malls. The most popular ones are the Riverwalk Mall and the Kgale Centre. The Riverwalk Mall also hosts the Keg & Zebra which is one of the few nightlife spots. The watering hole for travellers and expats is the Bull & Bush Pub. This vibrant bar offer cold beers and juicy steaks.
Tourist attractions are rare in Gaborone. The National Museum and Art Gallery is worth a visit if you want to learn about the San history and culture. Gaborone also offers a 18-hole round of golf at the Gaborone Golf Course.
Gaborone Accommodation
Good budget accommodation can be hard to find in Gaborone. A backpacker scene does not yet exist and budget hotels can be lacking in standard. Gaborone has a campsite close to the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. The Brackendene Lodge is a centrally located and an affordable option.
If you are willing to spend a bit more, the Planet Lodge near the city centre and the Gaborone Hotel close to the railway station are worth considering.
Gaborone offers several options for luxury accommodation. The Crest President Hotel is located closest to the city. Cresta Lodge has a quiet setting away from the buzz of the city. West of Gaborone the Grand Palm Hotel Casino Resort offers Las Vegas – style luxury with restaurants, spa casino and all the amenities money can buy.
