Constantia Wine Route

South African wine-making history started as early as 1685, when Simon van der Stel established the estate of Groot Constantia. The naturally sweet wines were much appreciated at European royal courts and Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have enjoyed Constantia wines during his exile on St. Helena. Constantia is the cradle of South African viticulture and until today has a reputation for producing wines of superior quality.

Constantia Wine Farms

The unique terroir on the foot of the Table Mountain Range fostered a remarkable history of wine-making in the Constantia area. Today eight reputable wine farms make up the Constantia wine route. Only 20 minutes from the city centre, the close proximity of the farms makes this one of the most accessible wine routes. The valley produces premium wines only and besides the famous sweet desert wine, you will find dry whites and red wines of international reputation. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are all grown in the mild climate of the Cape Peninsula. The tranquillity of these farmlands makes is easy to forget that a bustling cosmopolitan city is just around the corner. The wine route consists of:

The wine tasting centres are known for their hospitality and offer premium wines only. Constantia is known its density of world class restaurants. The cuisine of La Colombe or Pastis has been internationally acclaimed and the Cape Dutch architecture and the backdrop of Table Mountain make wining and dining in the Constantia valley an experience of pure bliss.
