South Luangwa – A Photographic Dreamland

The valley of the Luangwa River in Zambia is what wildlife-photographers dream of at night. This is one of the most intense areas to view African wildlife in all its dramatic glory. The density and variety of animals is incredible and some of the species, such as Thornicroft’s giraffe, are endemic to this area. Watch infinitely large herds of herbivores grazing in the grasslands, spot the shy leopard on a night drive, witness the speed of the graceful cheetah and feel the suspense when lion and buffalo face off.

Stunning Wildlife

The Luangwa River is also home to large amounts of hippopotamus and crocodiles lazing on the shore are a frequent sight. The riverbanks will get the avid birder rhapsodizing over fish eagles, goliath herons, pelicans, various species of storks and migratory birds like swallows, swifts, white storks and the red-chested cuckoo. The star of this avian show is the carmine bee-eater. This delightful little fellow starts nesting in September and when colourful swarms of bee-eaters grace South Luangwa.

South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s most popular wildlife destinations. This is of course due to the breathtaking game viewing, but its accessibility and the exceptional quality of the lodges in this area certainly add to the experience. It is here where experienced safari guides invented the concept of walking safaris. Particularly mentionable is Shenton Safaris, as they have specialized in photographic safaris that offer incredible opportunities for amateurs and professionals alike. Their tours have been praised by the National Geographic and the BBC and their guests often turn into regular visitors.

Breathtaking Photographic Opportunities

Derek Shenton, the owner of Shenton Safaris and the Kaingo Lodge, has a passion for African wildlife and conservation. The safari vehicles are customized to the needs of wildlife photography. The open-build 4×4 vehicles have camera rests, shelves and bean bags to make sure you get the photos you want. Derek Shenton’s experience and intimate knowledge of the African wildlife will get you to the right place at the right time. Morning game drives and night drives will reveal the animals’ most exciting behaviour. Be awestruck by the sheer size of the African Elephant, spot shy predators such as leopards and cheetahs or even witness one of the big cats making a kill. The rich wildlife in combination with the expertise of Shenton Safari gives you the chance to take some of the most amazing pictures of your life.
